Who is your favorite Muppet? Why?
QotD submitted by knitwitology.vox.com.
I didn't watch the muppets. So none of them. I could only watch 1 hour of tv a day when I was a kid so I chose Woody Woodpecker in the morning before school and then the Carol Burnett show in the evening when I got home.
Ms. Pacman was my favorite arcade game, but only because I never really spent any time in an arcade as a kid. My dad loved the Grand Slam Breakfast at Denny's, so whenever we went on the weekends we'd play the Ms. Pacman they had in the waiting area. It was really the only game I ever got any decent playing time in.
Favorite game now is probably the New Super Mario Bros. for the DS, which has replaced Super Mario Bros. 3.
This is spurred on by Jo's comment. In the 7th grade I had a little candy dealing business going. My parents would go to Sam's on the weekend and I'd eye these huge cartons of Blow Pops and Now n Laters and thought how much all my friends loved them and asked if I could get them to take to school to share. Then my mom suggested I sell them to my friends instead. She struck up a deal I couldn't refuse. She would buy the candy, and I would sell it and get to keep all the profits. I wouldn't have to pay her back for the candy. AND if I took the profits and put them into my savings account, she would match any money I saved. On the way home with my 3 cartons of candy, we stopped by the grocery store and got some rolls of quarters too so I could make change. That's how my Blow Pop Empire was born.
In the beginning I also sold Lik-m-Aid Fun Dips which went for $.50 a piece. They were a definite favorite amongst the students but the powder section of the packet would sometimes break open next to my heavy books in my backpack, making a mess. The little Lik dipping stick would sometimes snap too, making it a less desirable product. So after I ran out of Lik-m-Aid inventory I only restocked on low profile Blow Pops and Now n Laters which I sold for $.25 a piece or 5 for a $1. I made about $700 that year. So $1400 went into my savings account and then some time later my parents used the money to buy Exxon stock (any earnings were used to buy more stock) which now is worth about $15,000 last time I checked.
What food did you despise as a child but now really enjoy?
Beer.
I know beer is not a food, but I pretty much liked everything I ate as a child except for beef liver which I still don't like as an adult so that doesn't count. I learned to like beer when I was 19 during a study abroad summer in Italy. The school I lived in that summer prepared homemade meals for us almost daily and the only beverage choices we had were wine, beer or water. There was no ice and the water came out of the tap lukewarm. If it had rained we couldn't drink the tap water for several days so the only options were wine or beer. I'd often choose white wine because it was chilled and summer time in Tuscany is hot! The wine was made locally by the school and had a higher than usual alcohol content. That in combination with my low tolerance made for many miserable evenings so I finally had to opt for beer because it was the only other cool drink option that I could drink more than half a glass of. So gradually I acquired a taste for beer. Later that year, after returning from Italy I learned that Italian beer is not good.
