This is one of my favorite images in pop culture:
This choice seems kind of predictable but I've always loved this building and this cover design:
Honorable Mentions
I've always loved this Monty Python style of illustration:
I bought this album without knowing the band, but I liked the artwork*, and now I love them:
*I often buy cds because I like or am intrigued by the artwork, usually having no idea who the band is. I have to say I've yet to be disappointed. I discovered Detachment Kit, Slowreader, Rosebuds, The Rachel's, Takako Minekawa (all some of my favorite artists now) and others with this method. Scary isn't it?
Last night I went to see Beck at The Backyard. I can't remember the last time I've been to The Backyard but it's been a long time and suddently suburbia has cropped up around it. There is a whole shopping strip complete with a Best Buy and a Sprint store right next to it. It took an hour to drive in, park and hike out to the venue, nearly 45 minutes waiting in line to get drinks, and the best part of the show wasn't even the music (sorry Beck). The best part was the real-time puppet show mimicking everything the musicians did on stage, complete with their own puppet-sized video screen in the background. It was so meta it almost hurt. I was so happy each time they showed a close-up of Beck Puppet lip-syncing. The puppet show as great, but not worth $40. Last time I saw Beck play he did an acoustic set indoors, at the Bass Concert Hall, where we all sat down in seats like civilized people. I think I'm getting too old for these outdoor music experiences. This is why Stubb's is my least favorite venue, and now The Backyard. After the first 3 years of ACL Fest, I gave up and stopped planning to go. I suspect SXSW might be next.
